I've been doing my cleanup routine this morning and have a question and a comment.

First, I have no idea what belongs with what when files are prefixed by 01, 02, 03 etc. So, anybody who might care to clue me in regarding some files uploaded in june feel free to let me know. Otherwise they'll go into an iso as is.

http://154.ca/otr/shared/june2008/

More importantly, I think, is that a few uploads are very obviously cd rips. For example:

http://154.ca/otr/shared/june2008/audio/
http://154.ca/otr/shared/june2008/news/

If this material is available commercially then it should not be uploaded. And even if they are not available commercially then this naming scheme will eventually see the shared spot closed down. It's obvious the source is a cd, which are definitely not from the otr era, and given the copyright stigma attached to mp3 files, no host will stop to consider whether or not something is in public domain and they'll just delete the files or worse disable the server. So I ask that everybody respect copyrights when uploading, and if the source is in fact a public domain program on cd, then the least you can do is name files suitably so it's clear what we're dealing with... because the fact is if all we're doing is ripping off copyrighted stuff, then I'll close the shared spot myself. This is an otr site. It is not warez or a place to distribute files illegally.

Notable exception to time based copyright. We've had a lenient eye toward things like bbc or the canadia series. The reason is simple. The bbc and the cbc distribute these programs in convenient internet audio formats. If the people here make them available in yet easier ways then they are not doing anything that bbc or cbc aren't already doing themselves. I have the highest respect for the bbc and if they asked us to stop what we're doing with their files then I would comply instantly. But until such time, I think we're on fairly safe ground.

CD rips are a different matter entirely. The whole point of being on a cd is for commercial distribution, not internet sharing. If something is out of print and unavailable, then okay. Otherwise not. And regardless, to just upload something called 'AudioTrack' gives the wrong idea about what we're doing here. Please don't do it.

Thank you.

http://154.ca/otr/shared/MetropolitanOpe/...../istanandIsolde_Flagstad_Melchior.mp3

On a separate note, could the seven episodes of Paul Temple be put in the Paul Temple folder? They are currently divided between iso132 and the Paul Temple folder. There will be one more episode, part 8 of 8, posted next Monday or Tuesday.

how does one upload files to the shared folders?

i have a lot of great cbc shows and some bbc shows that i won't post on my website because i have copyright concerns about posting them without getting permission.

it looks like this site allows posting of the cbc and bbc shows... if you do, let me know and i'll upload quite a few cbc shows and a few bbc shows.

Bill, here is the shared site URL and the one for the uploader below. A lot of use file storage accounts like Media Fire, 4shared, Sendspace, Rapidshare, and other places. All of those file storage services offer free accounts and it's really a personal preference as to which one you use. The shared site has an upload limit for number of files and for file size too. 60 mb is the highest for individual files. Charles.

thanks! i may post my cbc stuff here... and i do have a 'shared site' where i post a lot of stuff... about 300 gigs so far, so i probably won't need one of the other sites.

actually, if any members here have any complete series or close to complete, or anything less popular that they want to give wide distribution to, i can give them an ftp account for a directory on my site, http://TennesseeBillsOTR.com and they can upload it and i'll move it to the main download directory.

just drop me an email at bill@tennesseebill.com if anyone is interested.

The shared spot is really intended for the sharing of small numbers of files, which is why those restrictions are in place. For large quantities of files, there are a number of free filesharing services that we use, as Charles mentioned.
